Should children engage in sports or physical activities?
The answer is a resounding yes! However, it’s essential to ensure that the physical activities are suitable for your child’s age. Many parents reach out to us, eager to start their child’s Taekwondo journey early, which is awesome! But it is just as important to adopt a progressive approach to sports, martial arts, and overall physical exercise. Rushing children into structed sports too soon can lead to unnecessary stress, so patience is key.
To help with this, we’ve created a non-exhaustive checklist that outlines what physical exercises children should be able to perform at different ages. This guide sets realistic expectations and helps your child develop at a steady, healthy pace.
We’ve mapped out 12 key physical skills for your child to learn each year. By following this checklist, you’ll notice significant physical development by the age of 7.
Here’s what your child should be able to do at each age. If they are not able to, you should gradually train them to develop these skills:

Physical activity is crucial for children’s overall development, helping them build strength, coordination, and confidence. As seen in our checklist, different ages come with different physical milestones, and ensuring your child progresses at an appropriate pace is key to fostering a lifelong love for movement and sports.
From simple movements like clapping, hopping, and running in early years to more advanced skills such as martial arts kicks, swimming, and team sports at age 7, every stage builds upon the last. Encouraging your child to practice these activities gradually will not only improve their physical abilities, but also boost their cognitive and social skills.
Do not worry f your child is struggling with certain activities, as consistent practice and a supportive environment will help them catch up. The goal is not to rush their development but to guide them through a structured and enjoyable learning process. As one of our coaches always say "When learning is fun, kids want to learn, no need to force them." - Coach Mike. Our job as coaches and parents is to make learning fun and spark kids' curiosity.
